Linkedin notifications by default can be quite irritating to manage on a daily or weekly basis.  It can be all the more noisy of an app if you factor in our own tendencies to have a reflex welcoming reaction for accepting any random invite.  There are plenty of individuals who want to connect and be a part of your Linkedin network but if they are indeed some stranger, have they provided any context to the invite?  Perhaps, use your stranger danger intuition and reconsider accepting it.  The same respect goes both ways for connecting with others.  Please explain why you wish to connect that individual.  Otherwise, prepare yourself for plenty of rejection from top tier networkers.  For the unfortunate majority who have accepted the masses to their LinkedIn network over the years, we have developed a housekeeping plan for you to clear the clutter and optimize the use of Linkedin to its fullest.

Step 1) Find the real value in your network

Get rid of acquaintances who don’t post any value.   That means saying no to the individuals who post generic templates that their work provides them.   No one wants to view this soulless communication.  Yes, I am talking to you… generic post guy or gal, create some emotional connection with your Linkedin audience, demonstrate passion and commitment to the product or service you are delivering or reconsider what you are pitching to your audience.

Great!  How do I thin the herd?

Simply scroll through your news-feed and click on individuals who are simply zombie connections or what you deem LinkedIn clutter.

Step 2) Fix your Notification Settings in the LinkedIn web browser

This is a work in progress.  LinkedIn tends to tinker in this section so what may be optimized to your liking today may be different tomorrow.  Find “settings and privacy” on your LinkedIn and start switching things off that don’t matter to you or simply follow mine options illustrated below.  With these five steps, you will begin to optimize LinkedIn news feed in no time.

The “settings and privacy” is broken out into “Account”, “Privacy”, “Ads”, and “Communications”.   Don’t worry you will only have to tinker with a couple.

Step 4) Engage in LinkedIn Groups more often

Just like your core friends, finding a good group to join whether it be Meetup, Facebook Group, LinkedIn Group, etc can be difficult unless you are referred to one.  Perform some quick sleuthing if you don’t have a referral.  Look for a healthy group environment where the members are helping each other.  Avoid the ones that don’t keep in check, members who abuse the group for the sole purpose of advertising.  Again, you want to avoid the noise.  Members posting helpful content for all is the name of the game.   Want to create quick access short cut to your favorite group or favorite web site?  Click here.
